What Changing MRF Economics Means for Future Supply of Recovered Plastics

Changes in paper markets have impacted the blended value of materials at the MRF. At a time when global brand owners are making huge commitments to using recycled plastics for plastic packaging - a demand of 5 million tonnes of recycled plastic by 2025 as stated in the New Plastics Economy Global Commitment report - these changing MRF economics have serious implications for plastics collection. In this discussion panel, industry experts will stimulate our thoughts with the below questions, with this conversation serving as a precursor to a larger, expanded discussion at future APR meetings on how to substantially increase the supply of recovered plastics.

    * Where will be with domestic infrastructure and/or exports markets in 1-2 years, 3-5 years?
    * Is there a silver lining in all of this with respect to domestic infrastructure?
    * What actions can APR and its member companies take to evolve in the new plastics recycling landscape?
    * Where are key system weak spots?

Bob Cappadona, Vice President, Casella Recycling

Dan Leif, Managing Editor, Plastics Recycling Update
