Welch’s New Frozen Concentrate Plastic Can Designed to be Recycled with Other Pigmented HDPE Bottles. The first non-bottle HDPE container made from the same plastic used in HDPE pigmented bottles.
How do I know what containers can be recycled? Until now, only bottles (containers where the diameter of the opening is smaller than the diameter of the container) have been accepted by HDPE recyclers. The Welch’s frozen juice can is made with the same HDPE resin used in pigmented bottles. A plastic frozen juice container with Welch’s on the label and the Graham Packaging Logo on the bottom should be recycled with pigmented HDPE bottles.
What about the lid, can it be recycled with the container? The lid on the Welch’s frozen juice container is made from injection grade LLDPE (linear low density polyethylene). For most uses, a small percentage of LLDPE can be recycled with HDPE bottles and not cause any problems. It is a good idea to check with the recycler that purchases HDPE from your recycling program and comply with their specifications.
What kind of label is on the Welch’s frozen juice container? The label is called Thermage or a heat transfer label. It is specifically designed to be compatible with recycled HDPE. A number of bottles currently recycled use heat transfer labels and they create no challenges in the recycling stream.
Are there other plastic containers made with bottle grade HDPE besides the Welch’s juice can that can be recycled? At present, only Welch’s frozen juice containers are made with bottle grade HDPE. There will be additional containers that can be recycled in the future and Graham Packaging is committed to keeping you informed. If you ever doubt the recyclability of a container, simply look on the bottom. If you see the Graham Packaging logo (below on the left) and the SPI Code-2 (below on the right), you can be confident that it should be recycled with other pigmented HDPE bottles.
